Casa Laurel Event

Miami, FL – South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, and the Health Channel), invites the community to a special screening of Casa Laurel, a film by Pati Cruz, featured in PBS’ Homegrown: A Part Of/Apart From digital-first series. This exclusive event will take place at the iconic Ball & Chain in Miami on Wednesday, April 16th at 7PM and promises an evening of cultural celebration, reflection, and connection.

Casa Laurel follows a vibrant community of elders who gather every Friday night for karaoke in the Calle Loiza district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. As gentrification reshapes their neighborhood, the film captures the resilience, joy, and cultural richness that these elders continue to embody amidst change.

Guests are invited to attend a festive pre-screening reception featuring live music, drinks, and light bites. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with filmmaker Pati Cruz, offering insight into the making of the film and the stories behind it. The evening will culminate in a karaoke party celebrating the very elders who inspired Casa Laurel.

Casa Laurel is part of Homegrown: A Part Of/Apart From, a groundbreaking series produced by Firelight Media, Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC), Black Public Media, and Latino Public Broadcasting. The series is the first of its kind to bring together the voices of residents from the U.S. territories and Hawai’i, exploring themes of identity, sovereignty, and cultural agency.

Casa Laurel will be available to stream starting Wednesday, April 9th at https://www.pbs.org/show/homegrown/.
