Miami FL— South Florida PBS (WPBT & WXEL) hosted a grand celebration on Thursday, April 12th, 2018 for the 10th anniversary of Changing Seas at our WPBT studio in North Miami, Florida.
For the last decade, Changing Seas has taken viewers on exciting adventures to the heart of our blue planet. Series Producer Alexa Elliott says, “It’s been an incredible honor and privilege to closely work with the scientific community and highlight groundbreaking research in our episodes over the years.”
In each episode audiences have the opportunity to dive beneath the surface with different experts who study earth’s last frontier. Along the way, they learn how human activities are threatening the health of the seas and its inhabitants. "South Florida is on the front lines of many of the most complex environmental issues that confront our planet, and it's our mission to reach the next generation with environmental programming that is firmly based in science." said Joyce Belloise, Vice President of Content and Community Partnerships, South Florida PBS.
Changing Seas has aired on 94 percent of US television markets as well as in more than 35 countries. In 2011 an episode of the program was the winner of the prestigious Communication Award presented by the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine. In addition, the series has been recognized with nine Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards, and eight of its episodes were finalists at the prestigious BLUE Ocean Film Festival, among other recognitions.
Around 150 people attended the 10th anniversary celebration of Changing Seas that was sponsored by YaYa Wine, Sidecar Kitchen, and Concrete Beach Brewery. The crew took a moment to recognize its long-time funders of the series, which include The Batchelor Foundation, Divers Direct/Ocean Divers. A raffle and silent auction helped fundraise for future productions of the series.
